Yousef Gorji Attends Opening for MineTech Hub in Zambia
Lusaka, Zambia – 12th December, 2024
Yousef Gorji joined government stakeholders and entrepreneurs at the groundbreaking for the timbuktoo MineTech Hub in Lusaka. The event, hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in coordination with National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NSIR), marked another moment for regional efforts aimed at technological developments within the mining sector on the African continent.
Minister of Science and Technology for Zambia H.E. Mr. Felix Mutati, was in attendance expressed his full support behind the hub and stated more needs to be done to drive investment for innovation, and research and development locally.
The MineTech Hub is one or ten nodes of the UNDP timbuktoo initiative aimed at creating sector specific eco-systems across Africa to cultivate entrepreneurship. The Lusaka hub will specialize in developing technology in mining with a focus on data analytics, waste management and optimising mineral recovery.
This groundbreaking comes amongst a series of mining headlines Zambia has had in recent months. International players have been eyeing Zambia’s mining potential. Major copper discoveries have been announced in the country by KoBold Metals, a Californian based metals exploration company, backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos. The strategic Lobito corridor also includes Zambia, which will allow the flow of trade globally through to the Atlantic Ocean, strengthen circulation of goods and promoting mobility of citizens in the region.
With continued announcements in mining, the country’s centuries old industry, Zambia can be well on the way to become a global mining powerhouse.
